Injecting the Lower Third

Aesthetic practitioners offering minimally invasive injectable treatments for rejuvenation of the lower third of the face should start with soft-tissue fillers to provide structure and support before considering botulinum toxins to reduce fine lines, according to an article by Mauricio de Maio, MD, et al, published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (September 2017). Treatment recommendations offered by the authors of “Facial Assessment and Injection Guide for Botulinum Toxin and Injectable Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: Focus on the Lower Face” include:

  • Avoid overcorrection of the lips by reviewing lip projection on the profile view and understanding the correct ratio of lip size to chin.
  • Consider both profile and anterior views when assessing the lower face, and remember that reshaping the jaw line with fillers can provide dramatic improvement in the overall aesthetics of the face.
  • Use fillers for structural support for the chin and jawline and botulinum toxins for treatment of the masseter and platysma to achieve optimal results.
