ASPS Releases Annual Statistics: Cosmetic Procedures Up in 2014

Physicians performed 15.6 million cosmetic procedures in 2014, a 1% increase from 2013, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ (ASPS) annual plastic surgery procedural statistics. The majority of treatments (13.9 million) were noninvasive or minimally invasive compared to 1.67 million surgical procedures.

The top 5 minimally invasive procedures performed were:

  • Botulinum toxin (6.7 million, up 6%)
  • Dermal fillers (2.3 million, up 3%)
  • Chemical peels (1.25 million, up 7%)
  • Laser hair removal (1.1 million, up 3%)
  • Microdermabrasion (882,000, down 9%)

The top 5 surgical procedures performed were:

  • Breast Augmentation (286,000, down 1%)
  • Rhinoplasty (217,000, down 2%)
  • Liposuction (211,000, up 5%)
  • Blepharoplasty (207,000, down 4%)
  • Facelift (128,000, down 4%)

The statistics do reveal some interesting trends. The number of men having plastic surgery continues on the rise. The top male-focused treatments included pectoral implants with 1,054 procedures performed—a 208% increase from 2013—and gynecomastia surgery with 26,175 procedures performed—a 29% increase over 2013.

Other procedures that experienced a significant increase in demand included buttock augmentation with implants and with fat and buttock lifts (98%, 15% and 44% increases, respectively).
