This year's Celebration of ASLMS Women in Energy-Based Devices brought the topic of humanitarian efforts and achievements made in medical aesthetics. This year's featured speaker, Lilit Garibyan, M.D., Ph.D., spoke of her immigration to the United States from Armenia as a child and determination to help others through medicine as an adult. She highlighted how the, "power of curiosity, passion and perseverance helped me get through insurmountable odds to become a Harvard-educated and trained physician-scientist, humanitarian, innovator and trailblazer of a new field of injectable cooling." Dr. Garibyan discussed how the humanitarian work of aesthetic doctors is something we should draw awareness too more often in this industry. For her part, she has dedicated significant efforts to her non-profit in Armenia bringing current laser treatments to people that need it for life-altering chronic skin diseases as well as burn scars laser treatments with old equipment. Most importly, Dr. Garibyan's hope in tellling others of her journey is that it "inspires you to embrace your own curiosity, to find your own grit and tenacity, and to channel your intellectual abilities into pursuits that can change the world. In the words of Albert Einstein, "The important thing is not to stop questioning." These kinds of important humanitarian efforts are not always recognized as often in the medical aesthetics industry, but they serve as an important source of inspiration for industry professionals to keep pushing boundaries in order to find new ways to help those individuals who need it most.
